Funding from the Foundation allows Avalanche Canada to provide programs and tools that help winter backcountry users of all types better manage their risk in avalanche terrain.
We will continue MTN Impact's membership responsibilities with 1% For The Planet. In addition to MTN Impact's 1% For The Planet obligations, every Friday, I will also personally donate $100 to a not for profit in the outdoor space. Then I will provide a brief write-up in the newsletter about why I chose a particular organization and what good they do to inform and possibly inspire you to give as well.
It’s Friday and that brings about our weekly $100 donation to an organization that shares the mantra of Play More, Waste Less and Do Better.
The Organization: Avalanche Canada Foundation
What do they do: The Avalanche Canada Foundation supports the work of Avalanche Canada, which is a non-government, not-for-profit organization dedicated to public avalanche safety. They also provide grants, scholarships and memorial funds to advance research in snow science and help many complete their professional avalanche industry training, with some of the recipients going on to become contributors and ambassadors for Avalanche Canada's public avalanche safety programs.
What do they really do: Funding from the Foundation allows Avalanche Canada to provide programs and tools that help winter backcountry users of all types better manage their risk in avalanche terrain. These programs include providing daily public avalanche forecasts, developing and coordinating public avalanche education in Canada, delivering youth awareness and training seminars, creating and delivering programs targeting specific user groups, and contributing to snow safety research.
In December 2020, Avalanche Canada launched the Avy Savvy online learning resource, which has already been used by nearly 16,000 people. At the same time, winter has just started and it has already been a record year for SAR callouts in BC.
Also, due to the pandemic, they are currently receiving less data from professional guides and having to send even more forecasters into the field to fill the gaps to ensure accurate forecasting.
Why They Are Important: At MTN Impact, you know we love to Play More. Avalanche Canada's mission is: "To inspire, engage, and empower recreationists to enjoy Canada's winter backcountry and be safe from avalanches." Let's help fund them through the Avalanche Canada Foundation and keep everyone safely enjoying the backcountry this winter!
